What You Must Bring To Get Your Taxes Done

  • Your Social Security Card (also, if filing jointly, spouse’s Social Security Card)
  • Social Security Cards for all Claimed Dependents
  • Valid Picture ID (e.g., Michigan Driver’s License/State ID, Veteran’s Administration ID, etc.)
  • Proof of Income
    • Wages / Salary - - Including Tips (all Forms W-2)
    • Scholarships (Form 1098-T)
    • Interest and Dividends (Form 1099-INT and/or 1099-DIV)
    • State Income Tax Refunds
    • Self Employment Income (e.g., Earnings from Contract Labor, Small Business, Hobby, etc.)
    • Alimony Income
    • Proceeds (or loss) from Sale of Stocks, Bonds, or Real Estate (including your home)
    • Disability Income (Dept. of Veterans Affairs Statement, Form 1099-SSI)
    • Pensions and / or IRA Distributions (Form 1099-R)
    • Unemployment Compensation (Form 1099-G)
    • Social Security Benefits (Form 1099-SSA)
    • Income from Rental Property
    • Miscellaneous Income: Gambling / Lottery Winnings (Form 1099-G); Awards, Jury Duty, etc.
  • Proof of Expenses
    • If Itemizing Deductions – Medical Expenses, Charitable Contributions
    • Alimony (bring recipient’s SSN)
    • Contributions to an IRA, 401K (post tax), or Other Retirement Account
    • Educational Expenses (e.g., College Tuition, Computers, Books, Student Loan Interest, etc.)
    • Child / Dependent Care Expenses - Amount paid for day care with the day care provider’s tax identification number (or an individual’s Social Security #)
    • Total amount of Heating Costs paid in 2009 / DTE bills
  • Homeowners
    • Proof of taxable value of your home and amount of summer/ winter property taxes billed
    • If Itemizing Deductions - Mortgage Interest (Form 1098)
    • Energy Efficiency Home Improvements (Receipts for new windows, insulation, furnace, etc.)
    • New Home Buyers (New Home Purchase Agreement; If Available, Closing Statement)
    • Home Foreclosure (Form 1099-C)
  • Renters
    • Lease or rental contract for the tax year; Landlord’s name, address & zip codes
  • Other Information
    • Copy of last years federal and state tax returns
    • For direct deposit, bank or credit union name, account number and routing number
