The Inkster Fire Department has been awarded a grant as part of the $14.9 million statewide initiative to enhance firefighter safety. The funding, facilitated by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), will enable the department to purchase an additional set of turnout gear for full-time firefighters.
Inkster was granted $65,500, which will equip firefighters with personal protective gear, including coat, pants, and boots.
In an announcement issued by LEO, the director made the following statement: “Ensuring the safety and well-being of our firefighters is paramount,” said LEO Director Susan Corbin. “This grant will provide essential gear that allows our firefighters to respond more effectively to emergencies, protecting both themselves and the public. We are committed to supporting the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.”
The initiative, called the Firefighter Turnout Gear program, is especially crucial for firefighters who often respond to back-to-back calls, leaving little time to clean their gear.
"This grant is a significant investment in the safety and well-being of our firefighters," said Mayor Nolen. “The additional gear will ensure that our firefighters have clean, protective equipment readily available, allowing for faster response times and reduced exposure to hazardous materials."
The Inkster Fire Department is dedicated to providing the best service to the community. This grant reinforces that commitment by prioritizing the safety and readiness of its firefighters.
"We are extremely grateful for the support of LEO,” said Inkster Fire Chief Jason Kaye. "Their commitment to firefighter safety is evident in this grant, and it will have a positive impact on our department and the community we serve."
The Inkster Fire Department consists of 24 uniformed personnel and has responded to over 5400 requests for service.
