Wayne County's Department of Public Services hosts four Household Hazardous Waste Collections per year for County residents. The collections are designed to accept unwanted household chemicals for proper disposal and electronics for recycling from residents. Only household-generated products from Wayne County residents are accepted.

Accepted Items

Items that are accepted include:

  • household paints, stains, dyes
  • floor care items, furniture polish, bathroom cleaners
  • lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers
  • antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline
  • automotive batteries, dry cell batteries, propane tanks
  • old computers, printers, scanners, TV's, cell phones, fax machines
  • mercury-containing thermometers, thermostats, and elemental mercury
  • fluorescent light bulbs (standard and compact)
  • smoke detectors, fire extinguishers
  • Pharmaceutical Waste (Non -controlled Substances only)
  • CRT televisions and monitors

Not Accepted Items

Items that are not accepted include:

  • commercial waste, industrial waste
  • ammunition, explosives
  • 55-gallon drums
  • radioactive materials
  • unknown, unlabeled waste
  • shock-sensitive materials
  • household trash
  • appliances

Residents are encouraged to bring in mercury fever thermometers for disposal. Mercury is a toxic substance and can cause serious health effects if released into a home or the environment. For more information, please contact Wayne County's Resource Recovery Coordinator at (734) 326-3936.

Wayne County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Recycling Voucher Program

Wayne County offers a recycling voucher program to Wayne County residents. This program allows residents to dispose of and recycle their household hazardous waste five days a week at the contractor's Livonia site. Please visit 3600 Commerce Court, Building E, Wayne, Michigan 48184, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to pick up your voucher. Call 734-326-5708 or email jdemerjian@waynecounty.com if you have any questions. Note that supplies are limited and vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Retailers like Batteries Plus www.batteriesplus.com can recycle batteries and light bulbs. You can check Call 2 Recycle www.call2recycle.org for recycling sites near you. You can also check with other stores like Best Buy, Lowe's, Home Depot, ERG 734-437-9650, etc., for their recycling options.

Tire

TireThere is no curbside collection for this item.

Drop-off - Tires

Many local automotive tire retailers will recycle tires.  Some tire dealers will accept old tires to be recycled. Policies may change, so please call first. Check online for additional listings.

Reuse - Paint

Buy only as much as you need to complete the job. Leftover paint in good condition can be shared or donated to organizations.

Municipal Garbage

This item may be accepted in your municipal garbage collection or drop-off program.

Most communities in Wayne County offer curbside garbage collection. Those that don't may have garbage drop‐off centers.

If your community does not offer curbside garbage collection, contact your local Department of Public Services office to find out the location and hours of operation for the community's drop‐off center.

Wayne County has four Municipal Solid Waste landfills.

Landfills

Wayne County Department of Public Services, Land Resource Management Division, inspects them once per week to ensure that they meet County and State standards. Additionally, there is a landfill available in Washtenaw County.

These facilities accept waste from residents for a fee. Please call first if you have questions.

Special Instructions

Latex paint is only a disposal problem while in its liquid form. Once dried out, it can be safely disposed of with your regular trash. Sawdust or cat litter can be added to speed up the drying process. You can call ERG at 734-437-9650 for recycling this item. Visit www.paintcare.org for other sites and information.
